Birth Trauma Support Group in Barrie (EMDR-Informed)

  • Amber Sperling Social Work and Psychotherapy Services 80 Bradford Street, Suite WW15 Barrie, ON, L4N 3B6 Canada (map)

If your birth or early motherhood didn’t feel the way you expected…

You might not talk about it much.

But parts of it still come up.

A moment.

A decision.

Something that didn’t sit right.

You’ve told yourself you should be over it by now.

That it “wasn’t that bad.”

That other people have had it worse.

And yet…

It still feels close.

It still shows up.

It still lives in your body.

You’re not broken—your nervous system hasn’t finished processing

Experiences from pregnancy, birth, or postpartum can stay with us—not because we’re weak, but because they were overwhelming, unexpected, or too much to process in the moment.

This EMDR-informed group in Barrie is designed to help your mind and body process what happened—so it stops feeling so loud, so close, and so heavy.

What is EMDR Group Therapy (G-TEP)?

This group uses an evidence-based approach called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) through a structured group protocol known as G-TEP (Group Traumatic Episode Protocol).

In simple terms:

  1. You are guided through a safe, structured process

  2. You do not have to share every detail out loud

  3. Your brain is supported in reprocessing the experience

  4. You remain in control the entire time

This is different from traditional talk therapy. It works with both your mind and body.

Signs You May Be Experiencing Birth Trauma

This group may be a good fit if you are:

  • Replaying parts of your birth or postpartum experience

  • Feeling anxious or activated when you think about what happened

  • Struggling with intrusive thoughts or memories

  • Feeling disconnected from your birth story

  • Carrying guilt, shame, or “what ifs”

  • Noticing something still feels unresolved—even years later

  • You don’t need a diagnosis.

  • If it felt overwhelming, it matters.

This is not about retelling your story over and over.

It’s about changing how your story lives in you.
