You’re Not Broken—You’re Becoming

A conversation on women’s mental health, hormones, and rewriting your story

Beneath the Surface

There’s a version of your story that rarely makes it into conversation. It’s the part holding quiet grief over the birth you didn’t have. The part that feels ragey by noon. The part wondering, “Why don’t I feel like myself anymore?”

In my Women’s Mental Health Talk, I named those pieces out loud—not as flaws, but as real, human experiences that deserve validation. Because healing doesn’t start with fixing. It starts with feeling seen.

“We don’t just become mothers—we become new versions of ourselves. And no one tells you how disorienting that can feel.”

The Invisible Load

Motherhood comes with an unspoken job description:

  • Emotional regulator for the household

  • Keeper of routines and appointments

  • Peacekeeper when relationships strain

  • The one who keeps going, even when she’s unraveling

We call this the mental load. And while it doesn’t show up on paper, it shows up in your body. In the headaches. In the late-night spirals. In the quiet resentment.

You are not alone in this.

Hormones, Identity, and Why It All Feels So Much

We often dismiss the hormonal shifts that come with puberty, pregnancy, postpartum, and perimenopause as “just part of being a woman.” But they impact everything—how you think, feel, sleep, eat, connect, and cope.

“When estrogen drops and cortisol spikes, it doesn’t just mess with your mood—it rewrites how safe your body feels to live in.”

Understanding the science doesn’t make the experience easier—but it helps take away the shame. It helps us see these changes for what they are: real, valid, and worthy of support.

Healing Isn’t a Luxury—It’s a Right

Therapy doesn’t have to be your last resort. It can be your turning point.
At Amber Sperling Social Work & Psychotherapy Services, we offer:

  • EMDR and trauma-informed therapy

  • Support for birth trauma, postpartum mental health, and hormonal transitions

  • A community-rooted approach that’s grounded in compassion, not perfection

This isn’t about becoming someone new. It’s about coming home to yourself.

“You’re not broken—you’re becoming.”

Your Story Is Still Yours

Motherhood can feel like a role you have to perform—but it’s actually just one chapter in your larger story. And you are the one holding the pen.
